Power Beyond Toastmasters
May 10, 2008 is our District ONE Spring Conference. The District Conference is designed to provide several benefits for the members of Toastmasters.
It is a forum for further education in developing our communication & leadership skills in many ways. We learn from our featured speakers as they share their life & professional experience to help us see possibilities in our own lives. We learn by watching & listening to the speech contestants to see the variety of ways they handle the Table Topics question & from the well-developed, thought-provoking International Speeches.
This conference features one of our Region 2 International Directors, Lauren Kelly, DTM, as she presents “Leadership In The Workplace” in our morning Leadership Breakfast. The Keynote speaker is Tara Church, an extraordinary woman who started an environmental group at the age of 8y/o & has gone on to accomplish much with her litigation skills with philanthropic causes.
The afternoon has 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking, Craig Valentine as he shows & tells us “How to Keep Your Audience on the Edge of Their Seats”.
We honor those who have completed their educational levels in Toastmasters at the Hall of Fame Luncheon & give special recognition to our newest Distinguished Toastmasters in District ONE.
Believe it or not, we’ll learn about how well the District is doing at the business meeting along with voting in our new district leadership team for next term.
But of key importance is the chance to learn from each other as we meet up with old friends, make new friends, learn about each other, & share what we do in each of our clubs. We learn & grow from the networking as we see what is possible from our Toastmasters membership & experience.
Make it a point to attend the District ONE Spring Conference on May 10 & see the many ways you can “Power Up with Toastmasters!”

January 2008
Happy New Year!
Thank you for what you do for your Club members!
For some Clubs that elect Club Officers every six months January is the beginning of another term.
Whenever they are elected, Club Officers need to be trained AGAIN, whether they are elected annually or semi-annually. District ONE is again sponsoring its Club Officer Training.
For Club Officers not able to attend the January 26 training, see the District ONE calendar for other Club Officer trainings in January and February.
Trained Club Officers are essential to serving the Club membership. Robert O’Donnell’s document on the Importance of Club Officer Training shows the POSITIVE correlation of Club Officer training and educational achievement/membership growth.
By the way, in sending email to Club Officers of Record, I saw that the email addresses that some of you have on record at World Headquarters are inaccurate or outdated. Check to see if the contact information for you and your Club members (you need to have the Club password) is accurate:
This February expect your Area Governor to contact you regarding conducting a Club Speech Contest to select your Club’s representatives at the Area Speech Contest. This Spring the speech contests will be the Table Topics and the International Speech contests.

January 2008
The District Marketing Team has been very active and extremely successful the first half of our term! We are thrilled to announce that we added 5 new clubs to District ONE before the end of 2007. They are:
New clubs don’t form by themselves; it takes a large dedicated team of individuals who are willing to give their time and energy to helping a club become successful. It all starts with a “lead” from a group interested in forming a Toastmasters Club. It may come from Toastmasters International or from a current member of a Toastmaster Club.
Then a Pre-Demo meeting is held with the interested organization to give them the information it needs to form a club. This is followed by a 1 hour Demonstration Meeting, in which a team of 6 – 7 Toastmasters put on an abbreviated 30 minute Toastmasters Meeting, followed by 30 minutes to organize the club. Once the club has 20 members, it can become Chartered as an official Toastmasters Club.
We congratulate all the new club mentors and sponsors who helped bring our clubs to life! We also thank all those Area and Division Governors and District One members who have participated on the Demonstration Teams. We couldn’t have done it without them.
We have done extremely well so far, but we want more new clubs! Our goal is to have a new club in every Area in the District! That means we will need many more new Club Sponsors and Mentors to help these clubs get on their feet. Serving as a sponsor or mentor can be a very rewarding and exciting experience. Our outstanding Sponsor/Mentor Team will train you to fulfill the job. Having the opportunity to observe the incredible personal growth of new members as they break free from their “fear” of public speaking is very rewarding.
Take on the challenge!
Become a Mentor or Sponsor for the next new club to join District One in 2008!
Also, let’s remember those low membership clubs! They need our attention as well! Take advantage of the new Club Assessment Tool: the “CAT SCAN” that is available on the District Website. In 10 minutes, you and your club team can evaluate the health of your club: your strengths and your areas for attention. You can then put together a plan to regain your health and fitness!
